The former quiet town of Limin Hersonissos is ca. 27 km east of Heraklion and is today a well-known resort with a lively nightlife especially popular with young people.
The central point is the promenade with numerous shops, discos, bars and inviting taverns with their terraces at the waters edge. Halfway along the promenade is a mosaic well from the Roman era.
Directly in Hersonissos there are small narrow beaches. The beautiful long beach of Anissaras starts 2 km west of Hersonissos and stretches to the village of Analipsis.
Above Hersonissos are the traditional villages of Koutouloufari, Piskopiano and old Hersonissos; the latter with a wonderful village square lined with taverns and cafenions, where the locals meet to play Tavli.
