HERAKLION
Heraklion is the largest city and has been the capital of Crete
since 1972. The Ida Mountains, Mount Jouchtas at Archanes and the Dikti
Mountains at the Lassithi Plateau surround Heraklion.
You have to look behind the scenes to discover the true nature
of the city, which, in fact, has much that is pleasant to offer. The city
consists of two parts: the new town with its modern shops, parks and squares,
and the old town with Venetian fountains, the Loggia as well as the market
street with its bazaar-like atmosphere.
The old, impressive city walls still stand and remain intact in
many places. The fishing port with the fortress "Koule" and the
arsenals are very vivid reminders of the past. In the Koule outdoor concerts and
activities take place in summer. Last but not least is the archaeological
museum, with the most complete collection of Minoan finds on Crete. A visit here
helps for a better understanding of the Palace of Knossos and the Minoan
culture.
For the interested visitor there is also the historical museum,
the Agia Ekaterini church, built in 1555, which houses icons from the 16th
century as well as other religious art. A walk through the narrow streets and
alleys can bring some interesting surprises.
